X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, has announced the launch of a dedicated marketplace for users to purchase inactive usernames, a move that creates a new revenue stream by monetizing its most coveted digital assets.
The new system will allow Premium subscribers to request and acquire eligible handles, which the company has categorized as either “Priority” or “Rare.”
“Priority” handles, which include usernames like @DavidChen or @CoffeeLover, are typically full names or multi-word phrases. These are available for free to Premium+ and Premium Business subscribers upon request and approval. However, if a user cancels or downgrades their subscription, they will lose the handle after a 30-day grace period.
The more exclusive “Rare” handles are short, generic, or culturally significant names, such as @Cloud or @Apex. These will not be available through standard requests. Instead, they will be offered through public drops or direct, pre-priced purchases available by invitation only. X has indicated that prices for these rare usernames could range from $2,500 to over seven figures.
For public drops, selection will not be purely first-come, first-served. X says it will evaluate requests based on a user’s past contributions, intended use of the handle, and their overall engagement on the platform. A key distinction is that users who purchase a “Rare” handle get to keep it permanently, even if their Premium subscription ends.
The launch of the marketplace is a strategic effort by X to boost revenue beyond its core advertising business. It also serves as an incentive for users to sign up for its paid subscription tiers. The company stated that this controlled process is designed to prevent bot spam and ensure a “fair and secure distribution” of the handles.
For users seeking a specific handle not currently listed, X has introduced a “Watchlist” feature to register interest and receive a notification if it becomes available.
